W+K TOKYO hijacked Lasta

On the same day we hijacked Sunshine Cafe Harajuku for W+K TOGO, we virtually hijacked Lasta. Lasta regularly visits creative offices that are influencing culture, and explores the meaning of “working”. This time, it’s all about W+K TOKYO. Akio and Kuki talked about W+K culture, and Mai, Dai and Genki were individually interviewed. More W+K TOKYO people showed up under STANCE, and answered the question “What does work mean to you?”. Our office building is beautifully featured under the SPACE section, and our global offices are introduced in TREND section.

Thank you so much for coming Lasta crew!

Farewell Sumiko

Last night we bid farewell to some dear friends, and welcomed some new ones.

The guest of honor was Sumiko Sato, who is leaving W+K after having been with us for over a decade. It’s impossible to adequately capture the depth of Sumiko’s contributions in a blog post. Suffice it to say that Sumiko has been the Mother of W+K Tokyo, and without her leadership and inspiration, W+K Tokyo would not be what it is today. There was a full house to honor Sumiko, to say so long to Jose Cabaco, who has been freelancing with us for the last 5 months, and to welcome new ECDs Frank Hahn and Naoki Ito.

The food was a gorgeous mix of Japanese, Portuguese and German as a tribute to Sumiko/Naoki, Jose and Frank.

This past week marked big change at W+K Tokyo, with Naoki Ito and Frank Hahn joining as our new ECDs. We announced the news in an official press release yesterday:

Leading independent advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy (W+K) announced the appointment of Frank Hahn and Naoki Ito as executive creative directors for the W+K Tokyo office, effective immediately. Hahn and Ito join managing director Trish Adams to complete the management team for W+K Tokyo.

“One of the most dynamic aspects of society today is the sheer speed of change and the desire for innovation, which call for new ways of collaboration,” said John C. Jay, global executive creative director for W+K. “With the creative leadership of Naoki and Frank, W+K Tokyo brings together two of the most unique talents in communications and advertising.”

Frank Hahn joins W+K Tokyo after completing stints at two other W+K offices, Amsterdam and Shanghai. Hahn spent seven years as an art director and creative director at W+K’s Amsterdam office. He was executive creative director of W+K Shanghai from 2006 to 2008, where he helped grow one of the network’s newest offices into a creative force within W+K. His touch has been seen on work from Heineken and Coca-Cola to HypoVereinsbank and Nike. Born in Germany, he has worked across Europe and Asia, including a year in Barcelona as a freelance executive creative director.

Naoki Ito joins W+K Tokyo from GT Tokyo. Ito is no stranger to producing great creative work. His work has placed him on the world stage as one of the leaders in digital innovation, and his work has been awarded in both Japan and internationally, most recently at Cannes, where he has won five Gold Lions (Cyber, Film, Outdoor, PR) in the last three years. Ito started his career at ADK (Japan’s third largest ad agency), then moved to Japanese creative boutique GT Tokyo in July 2006 as creative director. The following year he was awarded Best Creator at the Tokyo Interactive Ad Awards 2007. Ito’s recent work includes the Microsoft Xbox 360 interactive OOH “BIG SHADOW,” Nike iD viral campaign “NIKE COSPLAY,” Sony Walkman’s integrated campaign “REC YOU,” the Uniqlo website “UNIQLO MARCH” and the real-time interactive documentary “LOVE DISTANCE.”

“Naoki Ito is an unusual and sophisticated talent…perfect for the future vision of W+K Tokyo,” said Jay. “Frank’s international experience and willingness to pursue breakthrough ideas makes him an inspirational leader for many others.” “And together, Frank and Naoki are a powerful force, able to blend the art of storytelling with both craft and technology in order to create a strong and emotional connection with the consumer through multi-media.”

Welcome FRANK and NAOKI. We’re happy to have you both in the house!

Our first work for Oronine H Ointment

Oronine H Ointment has been loved and used in the Japanese homes over 50 years, and is placed inside the family’s medicine box like a lucky charm.

W+K has just renewed Oranine’s communication, aiming to change its traditional home medicine image into a more refreshing, modern image.

The concept, “Let’s praise working hands”, was developed into TV, print, POP, and interactive tools. The TV spot features working women at the flower market. Through the mixi appli we created, users can relieve their day’s fatigue just before they go to bed by petting the cute kitten “Oronyain” (and users also reminded to use Oranine before turning in.)

GO DARVISH

A no hitter at Koshien. League MVP in his 2nd year. WBC and Japan Series champion. Yu Darvish is the premier pitcher in Japan. He is also known to have a deep love for his fans. But unfortunately Darvish injured his shoulder and back and had to sit out the last six weeks of the season. And with the Nippon Fighters in the Japan Series, the fans of Sapporo needed him to come back. So we decided to give him a little extra motivation.

On the day of Game 1 of the Japan Series, we decided to roll a 1.8 meter in diameter ball through out the streets of Sapporo, get his fans to sign it, and give it to Darvish. To everyone’s surprise he made his comeback a day later pitching 7 innings in a 4-2 Nippon Ham victory. We then gave Darvish the ball prior to Game 4 back in Tokyo. We evidently made a big impression on him because he ended up blogging it on his own blog.

Great project. Hope we can do more of these in the future!
