W+K Tokyo

Mission Nippon

On October 9th, 250+ high school bukatsu football teams all around Japan received a special package from Nike. Inside the customized shoe boxes that arrived, bukatsu players found Nike’s new Super Ligera spikes and a personalized letter explaining Nike’s mission to help Japanese footballers play better and more explosively. The Super Ligera was designed with the Japanese footballer’s game in mind: made for ultimate fit and durability to play on hard ground and for long hours.

Some schools received a customized shoe box sporting their team’s school colors.

The campaign also included print, OOH and retail (shown below at ABC Mart and Nike Osaka), and is perfectly timed to lead up to the national high school tournament over the next few months.

The lovely Sophie Bodoh / W+K

Sophie Bodoh, a lovely lady and talented copywriter from W+K London, spent some time with us over the last few weeks partnering with Eric Cruz on some work we’re concepting for Honda. Sophie was kind enough to share her observations on Tokyo …

Hello, it’s Sophie here. I’ve been out in the Tokyo office for the past couple of weeks. It’s been great working with and meeting such a lovely bunch of people. And I feel like I’ve put lots of new things into my brain.

It’s funny because often it’s the silly little differences you notice. Like how all the wires are above your head instead of hidden away under the ground. I really liked the way they looked and I think I caused quite a few pedestrian traffic jams by stopping to take photos of them.

I also like the inside of cabs. The way the seats are covered with that brilliant white, crocheted material. They always look so pristine. I’m sure that if they were in a London cab they’d be completely grey.

It seems like people pay a lot of attention to detail in Japan. Even really ordinary everyday things seems to be really thought about and considered. From a toilet that has as many buttons as a spaceship to the view from an escalator in a shopping centre.

As well as seeing lots of new things, I’ve also eaten lot of new things. Like fish eggs for example (although I have to say I wasn’t too keen on the way they burst when you bite into them). Here’s me eating an octopus leg:

I’ve been to a few art exhibitions while I’ve been here. I went to see a Kenya Hara exhibition in Ginza Graphic Gallery which was really interesting. I especially liked the bit downstairs where he’d done these installations with water. It’s funny how something as simple as a droplet of water can be completely addictive to watch. Yuka also took me to see a performance by the Strange Kinoko Dance Company which was amazing. (Editor’s note: Sophie saw this performance while she was visiting at the Akasaka Art Flower show. )They danced on and around this mattress mountain with such freedom and energy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like it. Anyway, I could ramble on for ages about all the interesting things I’ve seen. But I shall restrain myself.

Thank you for having me. I’ve had a really fun time.

Thanks Sophie — you’re welcome back any time!

Driveverydrop.com invites you to participate in a real road trip across Asia Oceania in a lineup of Honda vehicles powered by the i-VTEC engine. Users who join the road trip virtually are able to ‘sponsor’ the journey and define the route we take by donating drops of fuel that power our trip through India, Malaysia and finally Australia. This road trip is documented in an ongoing series of short films that can be viewed on the website, as well as in this YouTube channel. The Australia road trip is still ongoing, with several episodes still to look forward to, so keep checking the site!

Here’s the opening episode of the Malaysian leg of the roadtrip featuring the green architect Ken Yeang:

Lashing out in Tokyo

Dagmar Hoogland, who hails from W+K Amsterdam, and Claudia Cristovao, freelancer extraordinaire, have been visiting with us this week while working on a Nike Women’s campaign. Perhaps it’s been all the talk about women, or maybe the strong influence of Mai Fukue, that prompted them to try out Shu Uemura’s entire line of false eyelashes. Stunning.

Dagmar sports the peacock look quite nicely.
